Responsibilities:

1. The incumbent provides direct in-patient and outpatient care involving full range of audiology and balance evaluation and treatment services including the selection and fitting of hearing aids and other amplification systems and devices, aural rehabilitation plans, and counseling of hearing impaired patients and their families.
Incumbent administers extensive and special diagnostic procedures to all patients from infant to geriatric with complex medical histories including difficult to test patients, developmental delays, traumatic brain injury, cognitive difficulties, complex speech disorders, and treatment with chemotheraputic agents.
Incumbent is responsible for cases that are difficult and complex both in terms of the severity of the impairment and presence of complicating physical and emotional factors that may impinge on the evaluation and treatment process. Administers the full range of tests including the tests of vestibular nerve function, evaluates degree and origin of hearing loss and or balance disorder. Responsible for the accuracy of patient evaluations and the soundness of recommendations. Supervision of incumbent is administrative and consultative in nature. Informs the supervisor about progress on cases, but is responsible for planning and carrying out treatment for the full range of disorders.

2. Audiological assessments include formal behavioral audiological tests, Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA), Condition Play Audiometry (CPA), test for non-organic hearing loss, immittance audiometry, otoacoustic emissions and electrophysiological testing (auditory evoked responses: Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response (ABR), and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR).

3. The incumbent performs and interprets complex vestibular evaluations such as video-nystagmography (VNG), computerized dynamic posturography (CDP), rotational chair, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP), electrocochleography (ECOG) examination, and makes recommendations for further assessment and appropriate referrals to specialty services including neurology and vestibular physical therapy.

4. The incumbent is responsible for referring and determining hearing aid and cochlear implant candidacy of all patients. Performs complete hearing aid selection, evaluation, follow up care and determines_ measurable benefit for patients with objective measurements. The incumbent will provide aural rehab therapy as necessary for active duty, retiree and adult dependent populations with hearing loss and Initiates rehabilitation program refe1rnls to Tricare Services Hearing Aid Program for those active-duty family members who require hearing aids, aural rehabilitation therapy, Exceptional Family Member Program, Infant Hope Program, local school districts and Otolaryngology Department for evaluation.

5. The incumbent will assist in scheduling education and training of staff by hearing aid manufactures regarding the latest technological advances for hearing aid design and circuitry. Implements current software and hardware updates, necessary for hearing aid fittings and assessments.

6. The incumbent is responsible for planning, delivering, and monitoring the effectiveness and clinical outcomes of patient-centered treatment and rehabilitative services for patients with significant physical and psychologically complicating conditions; including, but not limited to, the selection and fitting of all types of hearing aids; programming of digital hearing aids; issuance of hearing protection devices for prevention of acoustic trauma for those individuals working in a noisy environment; selection and fitting of assistive devices and assistive listening devices such as personal and FM amplifiers, telephone amplifiers, radio or TV magnetic induction devices for special communication problems; and inspection, modification, and repair of amplification devices and ear molds.

7. The incumbent plans, conducts, and coordinates aural rehabilitation, tinnitus, and/or vestibular rehabilitation programs for patients; designs patient-centered treatment plans to assist patient and caregivers to maximize and restore to the greatest extent possible physical and social Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team which must coordinate with other professionals to ensure patients with multi handicapping conditions receive required coordinated care. Responsible for the evaluation and treatment of Tinnitus and/or Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Incumbent must identify and establish if patients will benefit from advanced amplification or assistive listening technology and develops suitable aural rehabilitative treatment plans.

8. The incumbent is knowledgeable of the Newborn Hearing Screening Guidelines for the State of California. The incumbent performs complete diagnostic audiological evaluations on infants who do not pass the initial hearing screening criteria, or who fall within the High Risk factor for hearing loss utilizing Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) to obtain patient hearing sensitivity. Incumbent refers for appropriate consultation when a hearing loss is identified in a timely manner. Supports clinic assessment protocol for the identification of hearing loss, referral process and works in conjunction with other health care facilities, in the development of necessary education and rehabilitative services.

9. The incumbent will support and adhere to the Naval Medical Center San Diego Hearing Conservation Program in order to conduct diagnostic Audiology evaluations, identify significant hearing changes, determine etiology, re-establish audiometric baselines, fit hearing protection device, and make appropriate referral for specialty care, fitness for duty as warranted. The incumbent maintains current knowledge of all DoD and DoN hearing conservation regulations and and policies.


10. The incumbent serves as a resource for advice and consultant to other allied specialties including Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Occupational Health and Speech Pathology services and is recognized as a subject matter expert related to auditory and vestibular disorders in adult and pediatric populations.

11. The incumbent is responsible for supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and precepting audiology doctoral students, physicians, health technicians, and corpsmen in the principles of auditory and vestibular disorders, and aural rehabilitation treatment plans. Incumbent will provide audiology lectures when requested by supervisor or inter-disciplinary health care team May serve as an adjunct professor at San Diego State University (SDSU); providing education and training in the field of Audiology for doctorate students and healthcare staff at NMCSD. Supervisory commitment is less than 10% of workload.

12. The incumbent will participate in departmental research projects involving although not inclusive with patients who have auditory and vestibular Although limited research is conducted in the clinical setting, the use of carefully executed audiologic procedures may be a part of a research design. The incumbent may be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data. Research commitment is less than 10% of the workload.


13. The incumbent will participate in peer reviews, performance improvement plans, department meetings and credentialing processes. Audiologist adheres and complies with Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organization JCAHO, NMCSD & BUMED instructions, American Academy Audiology and American Speech and Hearing Association Practice Patterns, NMCSD Policy and Procedure Manuals, Audiology Division Practice Standards and Guidelines and standard operation Maintains and reviews manuals as required.


14. The incumbent will remain current with new developments in audiology and will maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engaging in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences and by communicating with other professionals in the profession and related professions.

15. The incumbent will be expected to attend regular staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate; review policies and procedures and attend in-service Incumbent must have the ability to integrate new procedures into daily routine schedules and exhibit strong communication skills.

16. The incumbent will maintain equipment; assure appropriate operation by conducting biologic Incumbent identifies clinic needs and supplies, maintaining inventories, informing supply officers and supervisor of supply needs in timely manner. Management of clinical supply levels, anticipation of future supplies that will be necessary for the clinic to run efficiently. The incumbent will be responsible for the proper maintenance and calibration of the specialized electro-acoustic instrumentation. The incumbent must have a considerable knowledge of the technical aspects of both the clinical instruments as well as the calibration of instruments.


17. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining certification, licensure, maintaining current knowledge in the field of Audiology by attending training as mandated by State of California and the American Speech and Hearing Association, American Academy of Audiology and/or the American Board of Audiology.


18. The incumbent will maintain complete and comprehensive medical records of all patients, providing timely documentation of medical care to referring physician. Incumbent maintains documentation in clinic files of assessments and patient care. Incumbent will complete all documentation in accordance with facility policy.


19. The incumbent may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial (less than 20% of the time).

Qualifications:
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Degree: Doctorate Degree in Audiology (preferred) or Master's Degree
  • Experience: Have at least 3 years of professional experience as a credentialed audiologist
  • Licensure: Candidates must possess a state license in Audiology by an official agency of the State, DC, Puerto Rico, or a territory of the US
  • Certification: Must have a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech and Hearing Association and/or Board Certification from the American Board of Audiology
