Associate Scientist, Rare Disease Translational Center
We are seeking a creative and initiative-taking Associate Scientist with a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and mouse physiology to join our team in the Rare Disease Translational Center (RDTC). This laboratory-based position work collaboratively on a team to conduct research around new and existing mouse models across a number of therapeutic areas, with an emphasis on Rare Disease. He/She/They will interact with the RDTC leadership and is expected to manage and mentor research assistants/technicians on initiative to support the RDTC and JAX mission.
The Rare Disease Translational Center supports the overall mission of The Jackson Laboratory: To discover precise genomic solution for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. The RDTC works directly with foundations and their associated teams of basic and clinical researchers to generate custom mouse models with clinical mutations to treat and cure rare disease and to support the translation of genomic medicine to the clinic. This position is an exciting opportunity to work directly with the Center in supporting this mission.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Hands-on development and characterization of clinically relevant mouse models and molecular biology and biomarker analysis technologies in key therapeutic areas, with an emphasis on rare diseases.
  • Support collaborative opportunities for new resource development with both internal and external scientists and organizations.
  • Work in a team setting to support the management of a multi-project portfolio, participate in the publishing of key results, support the generation of progress reports. Attend scientific meetings when needed.
  • Direct mentoring responsibilities for Project Manager, Research Assistants, and In Vivo Technologists
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in a life science preferred. MS degree +4 year’s equivalent experience or bachelor’s degree with 8 year’s equivalent experience.
  • Experience with in vivo study design and animal research (preferably rodents).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and mentor team members required
  • Positive attitude and professional manner in all interactions; demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to support staff to thrive on change and keep pace with a fast paced, dynamic work environment which is externally focused
  • Evidence of strong scientific productivity that is demonstrated by publication in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to collaborate with people across departments and gain their cooperation and commitment to projects with demanding deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to track multiple inputs and maintain current drafts, arrange appropriate reviews, bring project to close in a timely manner to meet deadlines.
