Duties

The United States Attorney is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Spokane Office. The Spokane office employs over 55 personnel, including approximately 15 criminal Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), 6 Civil AUSAs, and additional legal support staff.

The selected AUSA will be dedicated to investigating and prosecuting fraud against Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program. The selected AUSA will work with and as part of the USAO-EDWA's COVID-19 Fraud Strike Force, which consists of AUSAs, USAO support staff, and agents and investigative personnel from more than 15 federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Small Business Administration, Secret Service, IRS, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations, and many others.

The EDWA COVID-19 Fraud Strike Force is an agile, dynamic, and innovative team that has been repeatedly recognized by the public, the media, and the law enforcement community nationwide. The successful applicant will be able to work equally well individually and in a team setting, and will possess the judgment, skill, and fearlessness necessary to succeed as part of a fast-paced and aggressive prosecutive team. While the position will be stationed in the USAO-EDWA's Civil Division, the selected AUSA will investigate and prosecute both criminal and civil cases, and the position will involve extensive time in grand jury and court.

An ideal applicant will have a background or experience in one or more of criminal prosecution, investigations, affirmative civil enforcement, or commercial litigation. Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with e-discovery and e-litigation platforms, electronic court filing, and e-mail and word processing systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have a J.D. degree and at least one year of post-J.D. experience. In addition, applicants must possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment, and be able to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. The District seeks attorneys who have outstanding legal ability, high moral character, mature judgment, and demonstrated excellence in criminal trials.

Applicants must be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, Territory, or the District of Columbia. Bar membership documents must be submitted to show active status.

Applicants will be required to go through a background investigation, including credit, tax, and drug tests.

Initial appointment is conditional based upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication, and continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of the background investigation.

Preferred qualifications : Preferred candidates would have at least two years of post J.D. legal experience. Applicants must possess excellent research and writing skills, experience with e-discovery and e-litigation procedures, superior oral communication skills and demonstrated capacity to function with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. Ideal applicants will possess significant trial or other relevant experience. Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with the supervisors, attorneys, staff and client agencies.

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree and at least one year post JD legal experience.

Additional information

Salary: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay for one to nine years of experience is $59,319 to $139,183 plus locality. The current locality pay for Spokane is 16.50%.
