Primary Purpose of the Position:
The North Carolina Aquariums at Roanoke Island is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as Assistant Diving Safety Officer. The Assistant Diving Safety Officer will assist with dive safety operations by conducting a variety of supportive roles and tasks.

Description of Work:

  • Assist Diving Safety Officer (DSO) with maintaining diving safety; compliance to the North Carolina Aquariums (NCA) Dive Manual (OSHA/AAUS/RSTC Standards), NCA Dive Safety Board Directives, and on-site protocols managed by the DSO that are specific to our aquarium’s unique operational needs.
  • Assist DSO with dive operations by conducting a variety of supportive roles/tasks.

1. Perform surface support for a variety of dive operations (majority of work);
a. Assist DSO with efficient and effective communications; specifically, communications performed to maintain the daily and bi-weekly dive schedule – collaborating and coordinating between multiple North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island (NCARI) Departments (Dive, Husbandry, Education/Special Activities, Special Events, Operations, Public Relations, Visitor Services, Security, and Administration).
b. Perform the following roles/tasks; Standby-diver, hookah/surface supply tender, designated person in charge (DPIC), fill-station operator, a variety of aquarium habitat and animal husbandry tasks (mixing salt, surface feeds), efficient and effective management of dive program equipment and spaces (cleaning/disinfecting), timely and accurate record keeping via hard-copy forms and digital database entries, report all dive department safety/logistical/budgetary concerns to the DSO in a timely/accurate/professional manner, attend departmental meetings when directed by the DSO and produce written communications to share with the dive team, assist with mobilization/de-mobilization logistics for NCA conservation/research programs involving scientific diving operations, and participate with a variety of other NCARI community engagements as directed by the DSO and/or aquarium Director.
2. Perform working diver roles/tasks (minimal amount of work);
3. Average two to three 45-minute-long dives per week - maximum three dives per day in aquarium and/or offshore environments (includes diving with large sharks and variable water temperatures).
a. Conduct a variety of aquarium habitat and animal husbandry tasks (safety diver, animal collections, and a significant amount of time spent cleaning – scrubbing/buffing habitat surfaces), conduct dive presentations (Ocean Technology Systems Guardian Full Face Mask with wired communications) for educational/special events, lead recreational guest divers/divers-in-training on aquarium habitat tours, conduct scuba reviews for staff/volunteer (when approved and directed by the DSO), assist DSO in conducting live-action dive safety drills for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), assist with NCA conservation program scientific diving operations (offshore operations within 130’, and the potential for technical Ambient Pressure Closed Circuit Rebreather dive operations involving depths >130’ and decompression requirements)
b. Must be able to pass the following requirements within the first week of employment; NCA/American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) diver medical assessment, Divers Alert Network (DAN) Diving First Aid for Professional Divers Certification Course, NCA/AAUS watermanship skills/skin diving/scuba diving assessments to instructor level quality.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following requirements listed below:
1. SCUBA diving instructor certification from a nationally recognized organization or member of the Recreational SCUBA Training Council (PADI, SDI, SSI, YMCA etc.), NAUI etc.
2. Scientific Diving experience required (please document your experience on your application).
3. Experience scuba diving in various water temperatures and open ocean environment.
4. Ability to safely lift and carry a minimum of 85 lbs.
5. Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required as well as extended days and nights. Occasional travel is also required for Aquarium meetings.
6. Must have a valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Management Preferences (preferred but not required):

1. DAN Diving First Aid for the Professional Diver Instructor, AAUS Scientific Diver, Scuba Equipment Technician, PSI/PCI Visual Cylinder Inspector and Valve Repair Technician, and/or certified Full Face Mask Scuba Diver.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a natural science field, physical science, safety management, occupational safety, marine engineering or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year diving experience, including scientific diving experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement:
Certification as a diving instructor from a nationally recognized organization or member of the Recreational SCUBA Training Council (PADI, SDI, SSI, YMCA etc.), NAUI etc.
