Gettysburg College is seeking a full time Assistant Director of Life and Fire Safety to work for Campus Safety. This position will assist other Campus Safety members in fulfilling the expectations of the organization’s mission. The Assistant Director’s primary responsibilities are managing the day-to-day operations of the Life and Fire Safety program. This includes supervising Building Inspectors, troubleshooting fire alarm and fire sprinkler issues, and overseeing that Environmental Health and Safety Contractor. In addition, the position is part of the Campus Safety Command Staff and is an integral part of plotting the path of the department.
Responsibilities:
  • Autonomously manages the daily life and fire safety related functions of Campus Safety.
  • Approves quotations from vendors for repair and service of life and fire safety equipment.
  • Directly supervises Life & Fire Safety staff members and oversees an EHS contractor.
  • Provides operational leadership to subordinate staff. Delegates appropriate responsibilities to staff
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of applicable safety codes and hazardous materials procedures. Ensures compliance with laws governing these areas.
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with local emergency response personnel. Research and recommend fire safety system specifications for college facilities.
  • Coordinates with Executive Director to develop the Emergency Management program and manages day to day planning and implementation.
  • Assists other college departments in correcting unsafe conditions or code violations, and documents corrective actions taken. Assists in development of policy to ensure continuous improvement in safety practices.
  • Interfaces with appropriate college officials to resolve safety issues and concerns.
  • Works with the Executive Director in developing Life and Fire Safety short and long-term strategic initiatives.
  • Identifies budget items to support Life and Fire safety operations.
  • Conducts and documents regular safety audits/inspections of all college property/buildings and recognized Greek housing in accordance with NFPA guidelines.
  • Maintains life and fire safety operational records.
  • Maintains the campus siren to include monthly inspections.
  • Inspects, monitors, maintains, and reports concerns regarding the status of all campus fire extinguishers.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled tests and inspections of all campus fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, and components.
  • Documents and prepares reports of all conducted fire drills, safety audits, and related inspections/tests.
  • Prepares, completes, and distributes accurate, detailed, and timely fire safety program administrative reports.
  • Represents the department at meetings or other functions.
  • Conducts fire safety educational programs. Conducts fire drills, each semester, within the residential facilities and works with Residential Education staff to maintain readiness.
  • Provides instruction/presentations to staff and community members on life and fire safety related topics.
  • Attends training in the use of air monitors and Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AED) and receives certification in the use of AED.
  • Attends OSHA, NFPA, environmental health and safety, and related life and fire safety training programs/presentations.
  • Assists the Associate Director in the development of the fire safety contents of the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report as required by the Clery Act.

Qualifications
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a fire fighter, industrial hygienist, alarm technician, or any combination of related experience.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Strong personal integrity and reliability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to interact with others in a manner consistent with the high ideals of integrity, leadership, and respect.
  • Willingness and ability to engage with the public and Gettysburg College’s diverse student population with a focus on community and customer service.
  • Willingness and ability to work in all weather conditions and during emergency conditions which may be physically demanding.
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one at time of hire.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher education credits in fire science or a related field.
  • Training and certification in fire suppression, prevention, alarm systems/components/ fire safety equipment, electrical and mechanical systems/components, NFPA standards, OSHA standards, and other related fire safety programs.
  • CPR/AED and first responder certification.
  • Experience with emergency management planning.

Salary Level: $60,000

The incumbent is expected to faithfully execute the responsibilities of this role in full compliance with law.
