Position Location:
This position requires full-time in-person work on site and is not eligible for any regular remote work.

The Assistant Director of A/V and Studio Services is an essential member of the Communications Events team focused on the effective, high-quality operation of audio-visual systems and technology to support high-profile outreach and collaboration. This position partners with colleagues from research programs, business unit,s and Communications to create best-in-class experiences for participants and attendees of Brookings meetings and events. The Assistant Director reviews the daily needs of the conference center and studio bookings for needed resources and staffing. The Assistant Director monitors the functionality of equipment, troubleshoots issues, and serves as the primary point of contact for vendor maintenance work. S/he provides leave coverage for the Director of A/V and Studio Services, as well as A/V, Webcast, and Studio technicians. The position is salaried and hours will vary depending on meeting, event, and studio schedules. This position is considered a full-time, onsite position and reports to the Director of A/V and Studio Services.

Meeting, AV, and Studio Support (30%)
This role needs to have a grasp on all aspects of the three technician roles for surge and leave coverage.
  • AV Technician: provide support for onsite events by preparing auditorium for speakers (in-person and virtual) and microphone setup and checks, presentations and videos, and preps the video wall; performs post-event checks of event rooms and strikes equipment; edits event recordings; A/V support for virtual events and meetings utilizing web-based platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams, etc.
  • Studio Technician: management of the studio schedule, conducting live, remote, and pre-recorded audio and video interviews; crews creative, podcast, and other types of productions; supports TV crews and remote feeds of events; configure, focus and operate lighting systems; manage and maintain studio sets and electronic backgrounds.
  • Webcast Technician: operates equipment to produce, stream, and embed in-person and hybrid events on the Brookings website and other platforms; edits event audio/video recordings; ensures distribution and archiving of event recordings.
  • And all other duties as assigned.
Team Leadership (25%)
The Assistant Director of A/V and Studio Services is responsible for the daily operations of the AV-Studio team in the conference center, studio, and webcasting areas.
  • They must be able to operate a wide variety of audio-visual and broadcast tools, as well as provide training to other full-time and temporary technicians.
  • S/he will meet and collaborate with other colleagues in Communications, business units, and program planners regarding setup, technology and support needs for upcoming meetings and events.
  • S/he will establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, vendors, and clients.
  • S/he will lead the cross-training of the AV-Studio team to make sure there is surge and leave coverage.

Technology Maintenance and Improvements (25%)
The position performs routine maintenance, conducts regular operational tests, and reports all equipment issues to the team and supervisors.
  • S/he is the principal in resolving issues in a timely manner, serving as the primary point of contact for maintenance and repair vendors, and is responsible for confirming when the equipment is back online and fully functional.
  • Maintains equipment inventories and removes/disposes of broken or obsolete equipment.

Event Support (20%)
The Assistant Director serves as a member of the Events leadership team and will be involved in the planning and installation of audio-visual and studio upgrades and facilities improvements.
  • The Assistant Director provides leave coverage for the Director of A/V and Studio Services, and serves as back-up for all A/V and Studio technician roles during surge and leave times.
  • S/he also supports the day-to-day supervision of A/V and Studio colleagues.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Minimum of five years of experience operating and maintaining audio-visual and broadcast equipment. Experience providing support for high profile events and meetings using both integrated and stand-alone audio-visual systems is required. CTS certification is preferred. Experience operating virtual, in-person, hybrid events, and managing multiple meetings simultaneously. Experience producing virtual and streaming productions. Associate degree or equivalent training is required. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact diplomatically with staff and high-profile guests. The Senior Technician must be responsive to changing requirements and be able to manage multiple events/meeting simultaneously. Knowledge and understanding of audio and video signal distribution, audio mixing, video conferencing, web-based collaboration platforms, audio conferencing, PC and Mac computers, microphone types and usage, media file recording/playback, computer-based production software, server based transcode and media management systems, and video/audio editing is required. Experience working with virtual collaboration platforms such as Zoom and Teams. Able to perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot issues. Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. and prolonged standing and walking. A strong customer service orientation is required with the ability to remain calm in a fluid live show environment. Technicians must dress appropriate each day, collared shirts and business casual pants are required when working with clients during events or meeting. Must be willing and able to learn new technologies and cross-train for other team roles as needed.
