Assistant Brewer

Job Description

The Assistant Brewer assists the Head Brewers in operating our 10-barrel and 7-barrel manifold-based brewing systems at both Vibrant Shore Brewing Co and The Garage Brewery. Time will be split according to need. Aspects of these systems include milling, mashing, lautering, boiling, hop additions, whirlpool, and wort cooling. In addition, the Assistant Brewer is responsible for pre- and post-cleaning and sanitation of all transfer lines and vessels. The Assistant Brewer also is responsible for cellar tasks including, but not limited to, yeast pitching, yeast harvesting, filtration, beer transfers, tank CIPs, various fermentation additions and maintenance of parts and hoses. The Assistant Brewer will also be required to assist with running the canning line, filling kegs and preparing packaged beer for shipment.

Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting Head Brewer with brewing related issues, projects
  • Receiving raw ingredients
  • Milling
  • Basic brewhouse hot side operation
  • Quality assurance
  • Cellar work including yeast management, beer transfer, filtration, and carbonation
  • Operating keg washer
  • Cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of brewhouse equipment and cellars
  • Sanitizing of tanks, filter equipment, hoses, etc
  • Proper and safe handling of chemicals required for sanitization and cleaning of equipment
  • Understanding and practicing all internal safety standards

Requirements:

  • Passion for a Craft Beer with a focus on the local community
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work both independently and with Head Brewer, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be on feet all day and able to lift 55+ lbs regularly
  • Able to work in small spaces, with both hot and cold temperature fluctuations
  • Comfortable working with chemicals and adhering to safety, environmental and brewhouse standards at all times
  • Good troubleshooting skills, and strong mechanical/electrical aptitude
  • Self-motivated, punctual, and contributes to a healthy, positive, teamwork environment
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Some previous experience at a brewery as an Assistant Brewer, Brewer, or Cellarman is preferred. A strong desire to learn and willingness to work hard could warrant consideration with no prior experience.
  • Degree or background in biology, chemistry or engineering is a bonus but not required
  • Non-smoking environment

Compensation:

Compensation $15-18 per hour commensurate with experience

Job Type:

Part-time (approx. 32 hrs a week), however, could be full-time if the employee is able to assist with other brewery maintenance projects or works “front of the house” shifts in the Tasting Room when/if there is not enough back of the house work available. The Assistant Brewer works shifts of varying lengths. Brew-days may consist of longer shifts up to 10 hours, while packaging and cellaring shifts may be shorter shifts.
