REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in School Administration
  • Valid NC Professional School Administrator license
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or Director of Student Services may find appropriate and acceptable.

PURPOSE OF JOB: The Alternative Learning Program Coordinator oversees and provides direction for the Alternative Learning Program.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. The employee is required to follow all board policies and procedures and to comply with the instructions and/or directives from his/her supervisor(s).

  • Conducts intake meetings with parents and students prior to admittance to the Alternative Learning Program.
  • Works collaboratively with the Alternative Learning Program staff to plan, prepare, implement, and assess instructional lessons that teach the standards and are appropriate for individual needs.
  • Assists in the facilitation of the NCSCoS curriculum and local standards.
  • Follows rules and regulations of the state and policies of the local Board.
  • Follows administrative procedures governing curriculum, testing, discipline, and due process.
  • Reinforces positive behaviors and maintains order to support an environment conducive to learning.
  • Counsels students regarding behavior and academics
  • Maintains accurate student records, including, but not limited to: grades, behavior issues, and attendance.
  • Coordinates student attendance via the system records system.
  • Manages all behavior incidents and communicates with the student, parents, and other appropriate parties the outcome of the situation.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative, effective working relationships with educators, administrators and support staff, and staff from other agencies such as the Probation Department, Juvenile Justice (JCPC), Social Services, the Martin County Health Department, and other community based organizations.
  • Abides by the North Carolina Educator’s Code of Ethics.
  • Reports to the appropriate state agency any reasonable suspicions related to a child’s health or welfare as a result of abuse or neglect.
  • Communicates with outside counselors, e.g., mental health providers, or DSS to schedule school based visits, check-ins, or therapeutic sessions.
  • Communicates with parents on a regular basis about the progress of their child in the Alternative Learning Program.
  • Reports all accidents/injuries on the required form to the Director of Student Services.
  • Administers appropriate assessments, interprets test scores, and analyzes assessment data in an effort to improve instruction and student learning.
  • Coordinates and conducts, in conjunction with school principals, students, and parents, the transition meeting prior to each student returning his/her home school.
  • Receives training in and implements professional crisis procedures.
  • Communicates program staffing needs to the Director of Student Services.
  • Projects a positive image of the MCS Alternative Learning Program at all times.
  • Keeps information confidential concerning school business.
  • Acts in a professional manner at all times.
  • Is flexible and receptive to change.
  • Demonstrates an understanding, patient, respectful, and receptive attitude toward high-risk students of varied age groups.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults contacted in the course of work.
  • May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS: The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Alternative Learning Program Coordinator job classification within Martin County Schools.


Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
