The Advisor, Loan Underwriting, assumes a role in the Credit Risk division of Oriental Bank and assists in the credit risk management of the Bank’s corporate lending activities in the U.S. In this role, you will manage the loan approval process and underlying credit risk for sponsored loans originated in the U.S., ensuring adherence to sound underwriting standards and practices, highlighting conditions and pricing of credit, identifying credit strengths, and outlining potential weaknesses as well as risk mitigants. The Position is considered Remote, or may be based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assume a primary role in the credit approval and underwriting process as part of the Bank’s syndicated lending platform in the U.S., including credit facilities for large corporate and middle market leveraged finance, sponsor finance, project finance, and other specialized commercial lending verticals.
  • Operate within a strong risk and control framework; proactively consider broader risks to the Bank and partner with the US Loan Team (USLP) and other business functions in order to address respective matters.
  • Assist the USLP in conducting due diligence as it relates to potential loan opportunities and modifications thereof, including that of sponsors/private equity firms based on financial statements, credit ratings, fund/borrowing history, industry, economic, and other applicable risk factors.
  • Prepare adequately supported credit memoranda in compliance with Bank policy and guidelines. Communicate a clear understanding of credit drivers, primary financial measures, pertinent legal considerations, and micro and macroeconomic factors that provide underlying support for a lending decision.
  • Monitor adherence to Bank policies and initiate actions required to correct any irregularities, amendments to policy and borrower/industry limits, as appropriate.
  • Promote the continuous development of credit skills, product, and industry knowledge, as well as general professional and management skills, through coaching and counseling.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Master of Business Administration, Chartered Financial Analyst designation, or Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience working as a commercial credit analyst or commercial relationship officer, including at least 3 years in a Large Corporate or Institutional banking segment required.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Formal Bank Credit Training Program preferred.
  • Strong business sense: the candidate must possess a broad understanding of business models, industry dynamics, and competitive analysis.
  • Demonstrated understanding of syndicated lending activities: the candidate must possess a fundamental understanding of large corporate, sponsor/project finance, commercial real estate, specialty finance, and middle market/small business lending activities at an institutional level.
  • Analytical, problem solving, organized, detail oriented, and able to meet strict deadlines.
  • Good understanding of Federal and State banking rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills in English required.
