Job Description
Summary .
Under direct supervision of Branch Librarian, performs technical, clerical, and public service related duties. May supervise and train part-time employees. Is first point of contact with patrons so must be prompt, friendly, and courteous. Job requires flexibility in working schedule and a willingness to work extra Saturdays, Sundays, and nights as necessary for smooth operation of branch.

Essential Responsibilities .
  • Answers general questions about library circulation policies.
  • Refers patrons to other departments or facilities within the Library.
  • Charges, discharges, and renews library materials for patrons in person and by telephone.
  • Performs data entry for patron registration and processes library cards for distribution.
  • Receives payments, makes change, and writes receipts for overdue fines and lost or damaged materials.
  • Maintains and updates patron and item file.
  • May process books to be shelved in overflow/storage areas.
  • Notifies patrons of requests being held.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls.
  • May assist patrons in using the copier.
  • May help to solve patron/computer problems.
  • Produces computer generated list–send item, requests, and other lists.
  • Records nonautomated circulation statistics.
  • Sorts discharged library materials to proper locations.
  • Handles special loans, such as interlibrary loans and agency loans.
  • Routes in items to and from other libraries, including the daily messenger delivery of books.
  • Shelves library materials as needed.
  • Responsible for preparing reports and forms as needed, such as statistical reports, cash reports, time sheets, and monthly reports.
  • Assists in youth work as needed in absence of youth personnel, doing desk work and story times.
  • Orders and maintains office supplies.
  • Reports building and maintenance problems.
  • Performs clerical and other work as assigned by Branch Librarian or designated supervisor.
  • Notifies patrons of damaged or missing materials.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Patience, courtesy, and a helpful attitude are required in this highly visible position.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgment and maintain accuracy and speed.
  • Ability to spell, alphabetize, and use correct grammar.
  • Should have some knowledge of techniques in general library practice.
  • Must be able to work harmoniously and cooperatively with other employees.
  • Should be mature, poised and articulate.
  • Ability to use computer, credit/debit card reader, telephone, photocopier and library security system.

Licenses/Certification

Required Qualifications
Graduation from a standard high school or an equivalency degree such as a GED is required.At least one year’s prior customer service experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
One year’s clerical experience is preferred.
Ability to type at the rate of not less than 30 words per minute.

Physical Demands
Must be able to stand for considerable periods of time. Must be able to lift a normal load of library materials weighing up to 20 pounds and push loaded book trucks, which dictates agility in stooping, lifting, and bending.
