Howard University’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, one of 14 Colleges and Schools, is an institution that values academic excellence, interdisciplinary research, education, and clinical practice. The Department of Physical Therapy seeks a dynamic, qualified candidate for a full-time faculty position to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and clinical partners to achieve program and student success. The Physical Therapy program offers an accredited program leading to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. Students in this program are exposed to cutting-edge research and practice in both the classroom and the clinic
The mission of the program is to recruit and prepare to promise African Americans and underserved minority populations leadership potential to become compassionate, and competent physical therapists, with expertise in clinical decision-making, problem-solving, and research. The program is committed to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who promote critical thinking, self–inquiry, active learning, community service, cultural sensitivity, and ethical behavior and contribute to research, practice, and enhancement of the profession nationally and internationally
Qualifications:
  • An earned terminal academic degree (e.g., Ph.D., EdD, DSc, DHS) related to the discipline preferred with a minimum of 5-10 years of professional experience post credentialing, including experience in physical therapy.
  • An earned physical therapy (PT) degree.
  • American Board of Physical Therapy Specialist Certification preferred.
  • Physical Therapy licensed or licensure eligible in the District of Columbia.
  • Recent experience (within the last three years) with the delivery of high-quality instruction and patient care in clinical settings.
  • An academic background appropriate for appointment to a tenure track position of Associate Professor/Professor, including evidence of scholarly activity commensurate with the rank; or non-tenure track Clinical Associate Professor.
  • Online education experience to include educational knowledge of using such systems as Blackboard or Canvas, and prior didactic teaching experience is preferred.
Job Description:
Classroom instruction of DPT students; clinical instruction of DPT students; student advising and mentorship; class schedule planning; coordination of teaching, clinical, and outreach activities of the department. The successful applicant is also expected to engage in research, publish in reputable academic journals, provide scholarly presentations, and engage in public service at the university and in the local community.
Responsibilities:
  • This position will focus heavily on tutoring and supporting the DPT students to help with improving licensure scores and increasing outcomes.
  • Participate in activities designed to develop and implement operational action plans to meet the
strategic goals and objectives of the University, College and Division.
  • Maintain current knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing education that are
issued by the local, federal, state, and professional accrediting agencies.
  • Design, review, and implement didactic course content.
  • Design, review, and implement clinical course content.
  • Student advisement and mentoring.
  • Participate in scholarly/research activities, service to the profession, and professional practice.
  • Provide service to the institution, the profession, and the community.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Strong background in research methodology
