Our Personal Lines Actuarial team is seeking an Actuarial Consultant (*or similar) to join our growing team in Worcester, MA Corporate Headquarters, or remote work location.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Actuarial Consultant role within the Personal Lines Actuarial auto countrywide pricing team supports the execution of enhancing the auto pricing model (generalized linear model), keeping it state of the art. This team focuses on the home line of business comprising roughly $600M in annual earned premium.

As an Actuarial Consultant, you will independently complete routine actuarial processes with limited supervision. With direction, you will prepare descriptive analysis and may participate on advanced analytics projects. You will demonstrate understanding of actuarial concepts and may provide guidance to Actuarial Analysts in the fulfillment of their duties. All of this while actively pursuing your professional actuarial designation with the support of our Actuarial program.

This is a Full-time, Exempt role.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Assist in the semi-annual update of the auto generalized linear model (GLM) by-coverage pricing model for use in rating across all states
  • Understand the inputs and outputs of your models and work product
  • Assess vendor products through completion of a cost-benefit analysis to determine their potential impact in the auto GLM
  • Independently complete ad-hoc work aimed to provide a business insight into an emerging home related issue
  • Effectively communicate technical analysis to business partners and upper management
  • Incorporate industry and other external benchmarks into analysis
  • Build efficiencies and improvements into existing processes
  • Collaborate with members of the Personal Lines Actuarial home countrywide pricing team to ensure modeling approach consistency and promote knowledge sharing
  • Provide actuarial support on routine insurance department inquiries related to GLM filings as needed
  • Become familiar with The Hanover and Personal Lines specific strategy
  • Build relationships within and across functional areas
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and business partners in the completion of tasks
  • Develop leadership skills and provide coaching, mentoring, and/or technical guidance to junior team members
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Three to five years of experience in core discipline
  • Four or more Casualty Actuarial Exams
  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Possesses intermediate programming skills (SQL, R, Excel VBA).
  • Possesses a detailed understanding of the data sources used within the core discipline.
  • Understands fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures relevant to core actuarial discipline.
  • Applies project management skills to schedule, organize and complete assigned tasks accurately and on time.
  • Openness to Learning - Expands knowledge base through traditional and non-traditional education to improve personal skills and abilities.
  • Analytical Thinking - Applies analytical techniques, e.g., separating a complex whole into its parts or elements to resolve problems or issues.
