  • Stipend: Approximately $695 bi-weekly or $1390 Monthly, plus an education award of up to $1,718.25

Position Description:

An Academic Intervention & Mentoring Specialist (AIMS) facilitates learning, enrichment, and goal setting for K-12 youth through Youth Action Project’s school-based programs. AIMS ensure the effective delivery of tutoring, academic coaching, and mentorship to an assigned caseload of students and are immersed in day-to-day program operations at their assigned school site(s).

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Member duties do not include any prohibited or unallowable activities per 45 CFR § 2520.65.
  • Support a minimum caseload of 20 students by providing active, hands-on, project-based instruction relevant to students’ interests, experiences, and program objectives.
  • Supports students’ improvement in Math and English Language Arts, increasing engagement due to their sustained participation in Youth Action Project.
  • Develop and implement an Academic & Career Plan (ACP) catered to the needs of each student.
  • Manage classroom behavior to create a productive learning environment that prioritizes student safety.
  • Facilitate in-person and/or virtual learning that cultivates responsibility, leadership, and service to others.
  • Maintain digital and/or physical student files; collect/enter all required documentation: forms, grade checks, assessments, attendance records, case notes, etc.
  • Collaborate with certificated and/or classified school staff for program needs and effective service delivery.
  • Manage time and priorities to ensure daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines and key milestones are achieved on time and according to established policies and procedures.
  • Participate in all program promotion, student recruitment, and retention efforts.
  • Maintain communication with parents to share/obtain information to serve families better and maintain program quality.
  • Participate in required training (Training hours not exceeding 20% of total hours), National Days of Service, and other compliance elements as outlined by AmeriCorps.

Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident
  • High school diploma or GED required; minimum of 48 college semesters or 60 college quarter units strongly preferred.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to school site(s), YAP office, and meeting sites as required.
  • Must be available and willing to serve occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to lead program activities while ensuring student safety; activity may include prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and outdoor exposure.

Term of Service:

Completion of 450 service and training hours in the 2022-2023 academic year is required. The service term begins in January 2023 and ends in June 2023. Service is required Monday through Friday, 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm or 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm, with occasional evening and weekend hours served when needed. Scheduled hours are subject to change. Required participation in national days of service such as 9/11 National Day of Service, Martin Luther King Day of Service, Cesar Chavez Day of Service, AmeriCorps State Service Day, AmeriCorps Week

As a benefit, Members with qualifying education loans can apply for loan forbearance at the start of service through the My AmeriCorps portal if they qualify. Total living allowance and education award amounts are based on performing the minimum hours of the term of service and successfully completing the program requirements.
