Position Information


The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has a unique opportunity for a 55+ Program Assistant to work part-time, daytime hours in support of Senior Adult Programs by traveling to different community centers to assist with the smooth service delivery of 55+ programs at our Senior Centers. The Assistant will also assist the Senior Center Director and the Office of 55+ Programs with daily routine operations and management of the Senior Centers, to include opening and closing a facility, answering phones, responding to participant needs, performing administrative duties in support of program operations and ensuring compliance with all County policies and procedures are met.

Specific duties include:


  • Conducting on-site registration, membership renewals, class sign-up, record keeping, and recording of fees;
  • Maintaining accurate participant, budget, and administrative records using Microsoft Office products;
  • Assisting with the planning and implementation of special events, setting up rooms for activities and assisting with maintaining inventory;
  • Monitoring space for issues for availability and preparing work orders as needed;
  • Becoming familiar with 55+ Sports & Fitness programming in order to provide customer service to clients who enroll in fitness classes and sports activities throughout Arlington County;
  • Responding to questions from current and potential participants regarding availability of resources to seniors; and
  • Assisting with writing, producing, and distributing marketing materials for programs including 55+ Guide, Center newsletter, calendars, and flyers.
The ideal candidate will have strong administrative, communication and interpersonal skills, with technology proficiency to perform independently. The employee is expected to demonstrate effective leadership by following County and Senior Center professional standards of leadership including showing respect, responding with sensitivity to individuality; developing nurturing relationships, and creating an atmosphere where different perspectives, opinions and positions are welcomed, encouraged, and fully explored.

Selection Criteria


Minimum:


  • Bachelor's degree in Gerontology, Leisure Studies, Recreation, or a closely related field; and
  • One year of experience, or the equivalent of four (4) summers, in administration or management of recreation programs.
Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience, or additional responsible experience may be substituted for education.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in the following:
  • Working with diverse communities in a recreation program;
  • Human Services or Gerontology working with the senior (55+) population in a senior adult recreation setting;
  • Intermediate level use of the MS Office products including MS Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook:
  • RecTrac or similar membership management software; and/or
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish.

Special Requirements


The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid drive license, or the applicant must have the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-employment background check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information


Work Hours: Employee will work a varied schedule, mostly weekdays for 5-15 hours per week in support of 55+ Programs. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.

Work Location: Lubber Run Community Center is primary work location but employee will also assist at other 55+ locations throughout Arlington as needed.

The official title of this position is Recreation Assistant IV.
